Associations see potential for profits in print, media biz despite challenges

Some groups have bought media properties in recent years as part of revenue strategy

If “print is dead,” then associations are where some publications go to be resurrected.

At least that was the case for INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, which announced Oct. 2 it had acquired two industry publications from International Media Group. The company’s owner had been looking for a home for the magazines following his retirement, so he approached the association about a possible purchase. INDA agreed to the deal even though the group has only run a small technical journal in the past.

“It’s a little different from our normal activities, but I’m not afraid of that at all,” INDA President David Rousse told CEO Update.
