CEO Update: APICS revenue took a major hit during the recession but has since rebounded higher than ever. How have you changed the association since your arrival in 2006?
AE:
When I joined the association it truly was a turnaround situation. The organization had been losing about $1 million a year for the past nine years and our membership had declined from 72,000 in 1999 to 42,000 in 2005.

There was a significant disconnect between the board and staff on priorities and a lack of clarity on what was the board’s role and what was the staff’s role. So coming in, it was first and foremost about establishing clear roles and responsibilities. The development of a trust-based relationship was at the core of getting buy-in from both the board and the staff.
