The Association Management Center is tapping one of its longtime executives to be CEO, the first person outside the Engle family to take on such a prominent role.

Steve Smith, currently CEO of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, an AMC client association, will step into the top executive job at the company April 1, 2020. Smith is also vice president of client relations and a member of AMC’s leadership team.

The Chicago-based association management firm was founded in 1974 by Art and Dagny Engle, and is owned and operated by a second generation of Engles—brothers and principals Scott, Jeff and Mark.

Scott Engle, who had taken on the new role of CEO in 2017, will step down from the leadership team next year and transition to another role: chair of a newly created board of directors. Scott Engle joined AMC in 1981 and has been chief staff executive for a number of client associations. Jeff and Mark Engle will remain on the leadership team.
