Associations likely have little to fear about the European Union’s tough online privacy regulation or a similar law in California set to take effect next year, but they should still take steps to guard the data they collect, just in case.
The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, or GPDR, went into effect last year, applying to not only organizations based in Europe but any organization that does business in EU member countries. Last year also saw the passage of the California Consumer Privacy Act, or CCPA, which isn’t as stringent as the GPDR but will still be the toughest privacy law in the U.S. when it takes effect in January 2020.
