David Schutt’s path toward association leadership started with serendipity around a reflecting pool.

Schutt, CEO of SAE International, was a graduate student at Princeton University, where he received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 1992. The chemistry labs were then located across from the pool and fountain in front of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. It was a natural gathering spot for students.

“All those pesky policy people at lunchtime were asking me questions, so I became very intrigued by public policy,” Schutt said. “I wanted to grow and expand my perspectives.”

He became a science policy fellow at the American Chemical Society and stayed at ACS for 16 years, starting in government relations and eventually becoming CFO and chief strategy officer. In 2007, he joined SAE as CEO.
