Widening network, experience is key

Mid-level executives with their eyes on the CEO prize need to be deliberate about every career step: networking, networking, networking, volunteering, assertively seeking advice and mentorship, and taking advantage of every opportunity to broaden their skills, such as pursuing graduate degrees and venturing out of their own silos to peer into the silos of others.

A common generalization about younger workers is that they expect more responsibility earlier in their careers than previous generations. The good news is that they will get the opportunity: Boomers are retiring in force.
