Gordon to retire from science group
Barbara Gordon announced that she will retire early this year after 17 years as executive director of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The $20M-revenue group is based in Rockville, Md. “Barbara has spent just about her entire career at the society, and we couldn’t have asked for a more committed and caring leader,” ASBMB President Toni Antalis said in a statement.
Gordon began working at the Journal of Biological Chemistry in 1972 and went on to manage the society’s meetings and journals. She became interim executive director in late 2003, and was then named to the top job.
Gordon led the journals’ transition to online publishing and open access. She also oversaw the creation of various new programs, including an undergraduate degree-accreditation program and certification exam; the IMAGE grant-writing workshop; and the MOSAIC program for diverse young investigators.
