Among the myriad needs of the approximately 50,000 Afghan refugees in the United States are jobs. That’s where the association sector can mobilize its members and resources to help.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation has formed a coalition to match refugees with job openings. Coalition members, who are also helping with the refugees’ other humanitarian needs, include major corporations such as Amazon, UPS and Walmart.

“It’s a very fluid situation, and every day is bringing new and better information,” Carolyn Cawley, president of the foundation, told CEO Update.

The coalition—leveraging connections built by the Chamber Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes program—is working with the Department of Defense and has staff visiting military bases to assist. The refugees are initially living at eight military bases.
