If the weather is fair on May 17, as many as 20,000 people will participate in Bike to Work Day activities across the Washington metro area.  At least seven employees have registered at the American College of Cardiology, which also is hosting one of 115 pit stops for the event.

One of these riders is Ron Schmelzer, an IT project manager and business analyst who commutes nearly every day by bicycle. It’s just a 10- to 15-minute trip from his home to ACC headquarters in Washington’s West End neighborhood near Georgetown.

“I’ll bike any time of the year as long as it’s not raining or snowing, regardless of the temperature,” Schmelzer said. He rides a fixed-gear Solé bicycle with a red frame and blue wheels purchased through an employee awards program.
