The American Wind Energy Association will merge into a new association representing different players in the renewable energy sector, although at least one other group approached about merging turned down the offer.

AWEA announced Sept. 4 it would become part of the soon-to-be formed American Clean Power Association, a group that seeks to bring together wind, solar and renewable energy producers as well as companies that provide energy storage options. Some 30 energy companies have reportedly come together to launch the new association.

AWEA is a $23 million-revenue association based in Washington, D.C. The group provided few details about the merger, including what the move would mean for its dozens of employees. The new association has retained executive search firm Spencer Stuart to recruit its CEO. Tom Kiernan has been CEO of AWEA since 2013.
