Chief operating officer can be path to CEO, but some executives prefer supporting role

The inaugural CEO Update compensation survey for chief operating officers reveals many different names for the job and varying duties and levels of responsibility. It’s a position many associations don’t have, but experts and practitioners say the role of association COO is becoming more important.

Hiring organizations increasingly want COOs who can handle a broad portfolio and more interaction with external stakeholders such as volunteer leaders.
