Randy Fiser isn’t a scientist but in August 2020 he became CEO of one of the nation’s largest scientific societies, the American Geophysical Union. What he lacked in scientific expertise he made up for in what the group was seeking—someone who could build bridges to tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems.

“What I think drew (AGU’s board of directors) to my background, versus hiring a scientist or somebody from another science association, was this desire to collaborate across multiple sectors,” Fiser said. “They wanted to be transdisciplinary and reach out to other communities in this solution-science world.”
