Gentzel to retire from school boards group

Oct. 25, 2019

The $18M-revenue National School Boards Association has announced the retirement of Executive Director Thomas Gentzel, effective in May. The board said it would soon initiate a search for his successor. Gentzel has led the group since 2012.

In a statement, the board credited Gentzel for helping win passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which it called “a landmark law that restored local governance and community ownership of public education.” Prior to NSBA, Gentzel was executive director of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, where he had started in 1980 as a lobbyist, for 11 years.

Gentzel earned a bachelor’s degree in community development and a Master of Public Administration from The Pennsylvania State University.
