Ever since the internet’s inception, people have made and enforced rules in online communities.
“What do we allow? What don’t we allow?” said Christine Chen, who previously made the rules as YouTube’s head of policy.
Now there’s an association for professionals who make and enforce rules about acceptable online content and behavior. The Trust & Safety Professional Association (TSPA) and its sibling organization, the Trust & Safety Foundation Project (TSF), launched in June 2020. Charlotte Willner, who developed Facebook’s first safety operations team, was hired as executive director of both TSPA and TSF in December. Volunteers, such as adviser and communications consultant Chen, fill out the ranks.
