The Virtual Association Network recently hit a major milestone when it incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in June.

“We’ve been operating for four years very loosely. But it’s really only within the last year that we moved it to the next level,” said David Westman, executive director of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and a VAN co-founder and board member.

VAN has grown to 100 members who work at virtual organizations or have an interest in virtual organizations, Westman said. Members share files over Google Drive, communicate via email and hold monthly virtual meetings to exchange ideas and best practices. VAN also conducts an annual benchmarking survey about how virtual organizations operate. The group is developing a logo and marketing strategy and recently launched a task force to plan educational events. A website is also in the works.
